About the Governance, Advocacy & Resource category

This category covers the governance, advocacy, and resourcing structures needed to embed sustainability into research. It is the place to share examples, business cases, and approaches that enable lasting change. Topics include:

  • Business cases & financial paybacks – demonstrating the financial and carbon benefits of sustainability projects.

  • Staffing models & roles – federated vs central teams, technical support, and emerging sustainability roles.

  • Leadership & Advocacy – engaging senior leadership, VC/PVC advocacy, and influencing sector-wide priorities.

This category is distinct from Strategy & Policy, which focuses on external frameworks (DfE, funders, national/international policy). Here, the emphasis is on how institutions organise themselves and make the internal case for sustainability in research.

Hi all,

I can’t recall if this goes out as an email to all, but I wanted to share our refreshed UKRI Environmental Sustainability Strategy here: UKRI environmental sustainability strategy – UKRI

This refresh was led by Susan Simon, and outlays some expected but also new ambitions around integrating sustainability within our funding eventually (we need time to develop what this looks like, so early days before we can answer questions of details).

Best, Martin
