I’m Anna Lewis, Sustainability Manager (Research) at the University of Bristol and Co-founder and Director of the UK Network for Sustainable Research (UKNSR, formerly LEAN).

I co-founded LEAN in 2015 to help the UK research community reduce its environmental impact, and we’ve now rebranded as UKNSR to reflect a broader mission: making sustainability part of all research, not just STEM.

My work focuses on connecting people, practice, policy, and planet into a living loop — using small, evidence-led interventions at key leverage points to create system-wide change. Through UKNSR, I collaborate with universities, funders, and sector partners to embed sustainability into research culture, infrastructure, and governance.

I love working with carbon metrics and accounting, governance and environmental economics, sustainable design, sustainable procurement, and circularity — and exploring how these approaches can create lasting impact across the research sector.
