Two Days of Sustainable Research at King’s College London

15–16 April 2026 | Guy’s Campus | Hybrid

Dear Colleagues, the sustainable research community is warmly invited to join us for two consecutive workshops at King’s College London, bringing together researchers, software engineers, funders, and sustainability leaders to explore practical tools, training opportunities, and the latest sector developments. Spring is back soon to bring some fresh air and ideas!!

This is a unique opportunity to:

  • Discuss improvements on computational research

  • Learn about carbon calculators

  • Leverage sustainability training opportunities

  • Hear the latest updates from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the UK Network for Sustainable Research (UKNSR) community in our spring event

  • Share your experience, perspectives, and feedback

  • Help shape the future direction of responsible and sustainable research practice

  • Get to try our state-of-the-art Root-to-tip sustainable catering :wink:

Work smarter. Run faster. Waste less.

If you use HPC, GPUs, AI, or large research datasets, this day is designed for you.

We will explore:

  • Smarter, more responsible use of HPC, CPUs and GPUs

  • Sustainable AI and “reasonable performance” computing

  • Sustainable data storage and retention strategies

  • Practical tools such as GreenDiSC

  • Turning insight into action through facilitated roundtables

This workshop focuses on practical, low-effort improvements that can:

:check_mark: Strengthen grant competitiveness
:check_mark: Increase reproducibility and reliability

Join us for a full day dedicated to sustainability training and networking.

Morning session:

  • Making sense of carbon calculators

  • Practical insights into available tools

  • How to apply them to make experiments more sustainable

Afternoon session:

  • Showcase of the latest sustainability lab training for trainers

  • Introduction to a bespoke UCL-MRC-KCL course

  • Discussion of emerging sector-wide initiatives

  • Updates from UKRI and our network

This session will also feature perspectives connected to UKRI and the wider sustainable research community. The evening will include interactive roundtable discussions (in-person only) followed by an optional evening social (Location TBC).
