Hello all, question from our H&S team around gas regulator refurbishment -
Currently, Speck & Burke inspect our fixed gas manifolds and portable regulators every year any anything that is passed it’s 5 year service life gets disposed of and replaced. Most of the regulators still look pristine, on the outside anyway, and it’s always seemed terribly wasteful. We might be stuck with S&B for the duration of the current contract (trying to get confirmation on this), but could specify regulator refurbishment, as opposed to replacement, as a requirement when the contract is retendered.
Does anyone use a refurbishment service or have experience with this? It seems BOC may offer this?
Thanks!
Hi Elisa,
We have recently (last few years) moved to a testing/inspecting system rather than just replacing every 5 years for our wall regs, gas cylinder regs and manifolds. You just need a Supplier that is willing to take on this risk. We use Bayliss but I don’t think they have any availability currently. Feel free to DM me if you have further qs and I can try to help.
Best wishes,
Poppy

Thanks Poppy, that’s really helpful! I’ll take this to H&S and probably have follow up questions!
Hi Elisa - We had a presentation from BOC recently at the APUC Labs Peer Group and they do offer this service through their Re-Life service. I don’t have much more information but I can pass on a contact name if it useful.
That’s good to know- I’ll ask H&S if they want me to reach out on this, Thank you!

Hi Elisa,
This is something that Physics have enquired about previously with BOC, I think the main reasons for hesitancy at that point were:
- Cost of refurbishment vs replacement were considered comparable, or costed similarly.
- Maintaining the correct records for cylinder-top regulators (in particular) might be potentially difficult without the expiry being restamped; this might be a service BOC provide, and have greater ability to track at this point.
- Concerns about wear and tear that may not be detected with an inspection, or resolved by refurbishment.
These might be useful questions for the process? Would be very interested in following the result!
Hi all,
Please find job advert for an Environmental Sustainability Officer role we are currently recruiting for at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge.
It would be great if you could share with any relevant networks you have: Environmental Sustainability Officer - Operations Group - Estates and Facilities - LMB 2791 - Medical Research Council
Best wishes,
Poppy
