We currently use BSI and struggle to see the value they add given their expensive auditing and certification fees. Hello all, I was wondering if anyone produces gases on-site (nitrogen, hydrogen, liquid nitrogen), as opposed to purchasing tanks, etc? I am in contact with a rep from a company that sells gas generators for labs, and once I know the usage across our institution, I can get a quote from the supplier. Until then, I was wondering if anyone has looked into this and whether it is a worthy investment? The PAS provides guidance on the development of recycled plastic materials for use in laboratory and medical products, covering recycling processes, quality and risk management, and material specifications. The consultation closes on 4 September 2026. We’re looking at developing the sustainability sections in our inductions at Bristol Medical School and I was wondering if anyone would be happy to share what you have written about sustainability in your inductions? We have more sustainability content for staff and students that work in our labs (but this could be developed) but for staff and students elsewhere within the medical school I don’t think they get given much sustainability information during the induction. At the University of Bristol (UoB) we have conducted a research study (funded by UKRI’s Enhancing Research Culture). We wanted to explore including environmental sustainability in internal funding processes, with the aim of developing a research culture where sustainability is embedded in the design, delivery and funding of research projects. The hope is to encourage researchers at all career stages to reflect on the environmental impact of their research and also align UoB with external funder requirements. Firstly, we scoped the current landscape of sustainability in funding processes, internal and external which revealed a complex picture. We then conducted five online focus groups with 27 participants from the University’s Research Institutes (URIs), researchers from a variety of fields, procurement, finance and research support, and three workshops with 17 participants. The concept was well received and perceived as feasible and worth doing. Something occurred to me today… apologies if you have all had this epithany ages ago. I have just read a very interesting article, reviewing hidden operational factors \[physical and digital\] that have a cumulative and usually undetected influence on results and reproducibility. To support a more systematic understanding \[and reporting?\] of reproducibility, they propose the HERMES framework (Human, Environmental, Reagent, Machine, Electronic, and Sample factors) as a systems-based model for all type of research, identifying, classifying, and managing hidden sources of experimental variation (see Table 3). Hello, We’ve had a researcher interested in the viability of composting waste (bedding etc) from our biological/animal facilities. We recently heard about Glasgow University doing this but we’re unsure if this is possible there due to different waste laws between Scotland/England regarding this kind of waste disposal. Good afternoon. We are exploring using Warp It as one stop platform to facilitate and capture all our rehoming activities \[furniture, labs, IT?, maintenance, construction\]. I am mostly aware of institutions using Warp It for furniture and only hears positive stories. Hi all, After any advice / past proof of viability for encouraging users to raise ULT freezer temperatures from -80 to -70. Many of our labs have; but we are meeting increasing resistance from those that have not yet raised temperatures. Would particularly love to hear from any other vet school research departments about viability of samples? We also meet other concerns about switching temperatures of samples half way through studies - how have others navigated this? We’re considering having an additional freezer at -70 and starting any new samples / studies at this temperature and then phasing out the -80 in time; which will obviously be more energy intensive in the short term to hopefully get over this hurdle. Any general thoughts / ideas on how to encourage users where -70 is appropriate / ‘proof’ of certain sample types being kept at this temperature. I think the main fear is a lack of time buffer with them defrosting quicker with any breakdown issues!
